How To Respond When God Calls You To Stick It Out

I listened to a friend lament how a recent change at work had flipped her joy upside down. What had begun as little things quickly moved to big annoying distractions. As we talked about options and wrestled through whether the Lord was preparing her to leave and find another job or stay and stick it out, my mind wandered to my own circumstances.

As a stay at home mom my choice will always be to stay. No matter what. But that doesn’t make me free of feelings of discontentment.

Sometimes it’s easier to move on but that’s not always what we’re called to.

Even in the pain and the difficulty. Even when our own frayed willpower is what feels like the only thing holding us up. It’s difficult to stay content when our circumstances aren’t what we expect.

There are times when we are called to step out in faith and make a change, to leave that job or unhealthy relationship, to take a leap and risk the failure. But sometimes we are called to stick it out.

So, what do we do when God calls us to stay put?

We know that God calls us, through the Bible, to take every thought captive. Here are a few verses to encourage ourselves to stand firm and keep our eyes on God, even amid our circumstances.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
“For though we live in the world, we do not wage war as the world does. The weapons we fight with are not the weapons of the world. On the contrary, they have divine power to demolish strongholds. We demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God, and we take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ.” NIV

Proverbs 3:5-6
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your path.” ESV

Ephesians 6:18
“And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of prayers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people.” NIV

James 1:12
”Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.” ESV

2 Thessalonians 3:5
“May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance.“ NIV

2 Thessalonians 3:13
“And as for you, brothers and sisters, never tire of doing what is good.“ NIV

Ecclesiastes 9:11
“I have seen something else under the sun: The race is not to the swift or the battle to the strong, nor does food come to the wise or wealth to the brilliant or favor to the learned; but time and chance happen to them all.“ NIV

1 Corinthians 15:1-2
“Now I would remind you, brothers, of the gospel I preached to you, which you received, in which you stand, and by which you are being saved, if you hold fast to the word I preached to you—unless you believed in vain.” ESV

2 Corinthians 1:21-22
“And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, and who has also put his seal on us and given us his Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.” ESV

Ephesians 6:10-12
“Finally, be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” NIV

Hebrews 6:11-12
“And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end, so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.” ESV

Luke 21:19
“By your endurance you will gain your lives.” ESV
